The Liao River civilization denotes a sequence of Neolithic-to-Bronze cultures in northeastern China. Through Xiaoheshi, Xinglongwa, Chahai and Zhaobaogou, it culminates in Hongshan culture (c. 4700–2900 BCE), whose jade craft and ritual complexes at Niuheliang have fueled debate over early state formation.
